The UV lamp is an essential part of your filter system. Whether you have a built-in UV unit in your pressure filter or an external UV filter, a UV lamp is essential for keeping your pond clean. However, the UV lamp must function properly to do its job, so it needs to be replaced annually and the quartz glass needs to be cleaned occasionally. When replacing or cleaning the lamp, it's a good idea to inspect it again and check its operation. We'll show you the best way to do this!
Check if you can see a slight blue glow in your UV unit. You can check this by using the viewing window or, if your UV unit doesn't have a viewing window, by turning on the UV filter in a dark place.

If neither method is possible, you'll need to remove the electrical component, including the lamp and quartz glass, from its housing. If you plug the UV unit into a wall socket while it's outside its housing, the lamp won't turn on. This is because the lamp has a built-in safety feature that only turns on when it's inside its housing. However, there's almost always a slot or hole in the electrical component that houses a button. Pressing this button deactivates the safety feature, allowing you to easily check if the UV lamp is still working. We do not recommend this method of checking, as looking at direct UV light is dangerous to the eyes.
