Pond maintenance:
- If necessary, clean the pond bottom by draining the pond and hose it off; more than an inch of sludge is harmful.
- Locate and repair leaks using a pond repair kit. This should be done during every pond maintenance project to prevent permanent water loss.
- Reinstall the pump and filter; replace if necessary.
- Top up the water level by dripping water onto the bottom of the pond to prevent the formation of salts and minerals.
- Remove leaves and debris to prevent the build-up of toxic gases.
- Add oxygen-enriching aquatic plants to increase the oxygen content of the water.
- Divide potted plants to help them grow vigorously.
- Start feeding the fish carbohydrate-rich foods to support their increased activity.
- Move frost-sensitive tropical plants to their winter storage. Return them to the pond in the spring after the cold weather has passed.
- Divide and replant water lilies, lotus and marsh plants.
- Add new floating and submerged plants once the water has warmed to 50 degrees F and all danger of frost has passed; this will keep algae in check.
