Many swimming ponds require a pond pump. Some only use it to move water from the swimming area to the regeneration area or helophyte filter, while others only use it to pump water to a pond filter . However, a pump for a swimming pond must meet several legal requirements compared to those used in a standard pond. Only 12-volt swimming pond pumps may be used directly in the water. All other pond pumps may only be installed dry near a swimming pond. These pumps may not be placed in the water, including in a separate, enclosed filter pit. Non- 12-volt pond pumps may be used if they are located at least 2 meters away from the pond and are installed in a service pit. In addition, the pressure line must be grounded for short-circuit protection.

12-volt pond pumps are therefore always suitable for use in and around a swimming pond, while all other pond pumps must meet the requirements listed above. If you want to place the pond pump in the swimming area of the pond or in the plant filter, you'll always want a 12-volt pond pump. Because the voltage is much lower, this pond pump is safe for use in a swimming pond. In the example below, a 12-volt pond pump is used connected to two satellite filters. This allows the pump to draw water from three different locations. The swimming pond pump then pumps the water to a pond filter. This filter filters the water mechanically, biologically, and with a UV lamp , after which it flows back into the plant filter via a short stream.
Which swimming pond pump do I need for my swimming pond?
The pump capacity for a swimming pond pump depends primarily on the size of the pond. If you're using a pond filter, choose a pump that matches the filter's maximum pump capacity. If you're using the swimming pond pump solely to circulate water between the swimming area and the bog area, the fish population will be the deciding factor. As a general rule, you can follow these guidelines when choosing a swimming pond pump .
- Swimming pond without fish : Choose a swimming pond pump that can circulate the contents of your pond in 4 to 5 hours.
- Swimming pond with few fish : Choose a swimming pond pump that can circulate the contents of your pond in 3 to 4 hours.
- Swimming pond with lots of fish : Choose a swimming pond pump that can circulate the contents of your pond in 1 to 2 hours.
