If you have a pond, you naturally want beautiful fish in it. That's why there's nothing more enjoyable than buying fish. Choose quality and transport the fish as efficiently as possible. Also, ensure the fish are kept in a pond that is clear and has a good biological balance.
A newly constructed pond still needs to establish a biological balance. This can take several months. Therefore, it's wise to wait a few months initially before introducing new fish. New fish can disrupt the biological balance.
Place the new fish in a clear pond. The rule of thumb is that you should be able to see the fish's shadow on the pond bottom. If this isn't the case, clear the pond of algae. You don't want the new fish to die quickly.
The best time to buy pond fish is between March and June. This allows the fish to acclimate to their new environment before winter sets in. Buy fish from a specialty store or garden center. They generally have high-quality, healthy fish for sale.
If you've purchased new fish, they'll arrive in a plastic bag. Oxygen is added to this plastic bag to ensure the fish have sufficient water during the trip. Keep the bag as still as possible and out of direct sunlight during the trip. Then, place the bag in the pond for fifteen minutes, preferably in a shady spot. This will bring the water temperature in the bag to the same level as your pond's.
After fifteen minutes, open the bag and add two to three scoops of water. Then close it and put the bag away in the corner of the pond for another fifteen minutes. Repeat this process one more time, for a total of three fifteen-minute sessions to allow the fish to acclimate optimally. This minimizes the risk of mortality. Now you can enjoy your fish!
