Pond lighting serves two purposes: safety and visual impact. It illuminates the edges of the water and the paving stones to ensure safe access to the pond at night. Besides safety, the lights can create dramatic effects and highlight certain features of a pond. There are two types of pond lighting:
- Lighting that surrounds the outside of the pond.
- Lighting that is underwater.
Outdoor lights should use white-tinted lights that make the water's surface glow, or to accentuate a waterfall, a prized plant, or another feature. Underwater lighting is often used to highlight fountains or sculptures.
