Oyster shells - KH and pH always in good condition
Oyster shells have a particularly stabilizing effect on the KH value, and thus indirectly on the pH value. The KH value indicates the carbonate hardness of the water. Air-Aqua supplies high-quality, clean, and disinfected oyster shells.
Many people think that if they have slightly harder tap water, they won't have any problems with the KH and pH levels. KH acts as a buffer for the water's acidity (pH). Fish, plants, and the biological filter "consume" water hardness (KH). If, for example, few water changes are made during the winter, the KH level can quickly become too low. During periods of heavy rain, the KH level also drops rapidly. This has serious consequences for the fish, as the pH level can suddenly drop sharply (a so-called pH crash).
Often, the KH value in the pond isn't measured regularly enough. Only when problems arise, when it's too late, is intervention done by adding additives such as KH+ powder. However, KH+ powder has several disadvantages:
• a lot of powder disappears very quickly through the bottom drain/filter system
• short-term boost effect, large fluctuations in water values
• always have to keep measuring and adding powder
Oyster shells ensure complete long-term KH and pH stabilization. The oyster shells only begin to dissolve slowly when the KH drops, thus buffering the pH.
Completely independent of rainfall, water changes, or the season: the oyster shells automatically maintain your KH and pH levels. Only when the oyster shells have almost dissolved should you refill them with new oyster shells. As a rough guide, one bag of oyster shells per 10m³ of water volume per year is recommended; the exact requirements, of course, depend heavily on factors such as those described above.
Oyster shells are supplied in a net for easy rinsing. They are chlorine-washed and then dried, guaranteeing the absence of harmful bacteria, fungi, or pathogens. The shells are also highly suitable for use as biological filter material in trickle or multi-chamber systems.
Please note: These oyster shells are not suitable for hobby purposes such as making necklaces or painting oyster shells.
