To truly enjoy clear water and healthy fish without any worries, a properly functioning pond filter is crucial. There comes a time when pond filter maintenance is necessary, and the filter materials need to be replaced. With most pond filters, it's wise to do this once a year. This keeps the filter functioning optimally and you can continue to enjoy a healthy and clear pond.
Your pond water contains a lot of debris, such as leaves, feces, food waste, and soil. This debris ends up in the first chamber of your pond filter. Depending on the size of your pond and the amount of debris that accumulates, you should clean this first chamber regularly. Remove as many parts/brushes from the filter as possible and clean them with water.
The second chamber of the pond filter houses the beneficial bacteria that form the basis of the biological pond filter. These bacteria break down the fish's waste. The bacteria are housed in mats. Clean these mats once or twice a year. Do this carefully, preferably with pond water, to minimize damage to the bacteria. Ensure the mats remain moist. The best time to clean the pond filter is after autumn, as this is when most debris accumulates in the pond.
