Pond filters, which one is right for your pond?

A filter set is essential for keeping a pond clean. A filter traps dirt to keep your water clean, kills algae with its UV unit, and maintains healthy water parameters through bacteria in the filter. The bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite. This process is explained in the article about the nitrogen cycle .

But which filter is right for you? There are essentially three options: an internal filter, a pressure filter, and a flow-through filter. These are explained below:

An internal filter

An internal filter is a filter that (as the name suggests) is placed inside the pond. Internal filters are often used in smaller ponds, ranging from 500 liters to 3,000 to 4,000 liters. The size of the filter depends on the fish population.

The all-in-one function makes the internal filter compact and easy to integrate into your pond. These filters include:

  • Filter foam that catches coarse dirt,
  • Filter stones that bacteria adhere to well,
  • A pump that moves the water,
  • A UV lamp that kills the algae,
  • These internal filters often have a fountain option. A fountain provides oxygen through the falling water and also creates ambiance.

A pressure filter

A pressure filter is a filter operated under pressure. This filter is a closed, cylindrical housing containing both filter foam and a UV lamp. The pressure filter is fed by a pump located in the pond or installed dry outside the pond. Using a pond hose, the pump moves the water to the inlet of the pressure filter, after which the water passes through the UV lamp and the filter foam. After this process, the water returns to the pond.

The major advantage of a pressure filter is its ability to be easily integrated. Water is pumped into the filter under pressure and exits under pressure. This allows the filter to be easily placed further away from the pond, for example, in a shed. It can even be partially buried.

Pressure filters come in various shapes and sizes. Vijverleven offers a wide range of these, and the selection guide on the left side of the product pages will guide you to the right filter.

The advantages of a pressure filter:

  • A pressure filter is beautiful and easy to use in a garden or garden shed,
  • Easy to maintain due to its own rinsing function,
  • Compact and user-friendly.

A flow-through filter

A flow-through filter is a filter through which pond water flows. The water flows past several filter pads, removing debris. This filter is powered by a pump located in the pond or by a dry pump installed outside the pond. This filter must be installed above the water level because the water flows out, so it cannot be placed far from the pond. The filter outlet is often placed near the pond or at the beginning of a stream.

Flow-through filters do not always have a built-in UV unit, so it is useful to check this when purchasing.

Flow-through filters come in various shapes and sizes. Vijverleven offers a wide range of these, and the selection guide on the left side of the product pages will guide you to the right filter.

The advantages of a flow-through filter:

  • Relatively cheap,
  • Easy to connect,
  • Easy to maintain.
