Pond water quality: pond water values

You might not immediately think of it, but pond water contains all sorts of parameters. The most important parameters that need to be at the right level are the pH, GH, and KH values. Below, we briefly explain what these pond water parameters are and what effects they have.

Pond water acidity / pH value

The pH value indicates the acidity of pond water; a good value is between 7 and 8. This value provides insight into the number of microorganisms present in the pond. These organisms produce carbon dioxide for aquatic plants.

Is the water too acidic or too basic? With a properly functioning biological filter can you control this well, also add bacteria to your filter annually.

Water hardness / GH value

The GH value indicates water hardness and is expressed in German degrees of hardness (DH). A correct water hardness ranges between 8 and 12°DH. This hardness is primarily due to calcium and magnesium sulfates. These important minerals ensure a stable environment, growth of aquatic plants, and development of soil bacteria. With good water hardness, oxygen-producing plants and microorganisms thrive. Velda GH Plus is a highly effective product for increasing the total hardness of pond water.

Carbonate/KH value

New ponds, in particular, almost always suffer from CO2 deficiency because there are relatively few bacteria present. Adding carbonate is a good way to get through the critical start-up phase. A good KH value ensures clear pond water and prevents algae growth. A good product for this is KH Plus.

KH Plus activates aquatic plants

Velda's KH Plus increases the carbonate hardness (KH value) of pond water. This KH value, like the GH value, is expressed in German Hardness Degrees (DH). A sufficiently high value (4 to 8°DH) counteracts acidification in the pond environment and, through the bound CO2, ensures healthy development of oxygenating plants. Use: 500ml is sufficient to increase 5000 liters of pond water by 3 points.

Testing pond water values

It's important to test your pond water regularly so you know if the pH, GH, and KH values are correct, or if you need to intervene. We have a number of test kits for sale in our webshop.
