Feeding pond fish: tips and tricks!

pond fish feeding

All about feeding your pond fish

The energy source for fish is, of course, fish food. But how often should you feed them? And how much should you give them? The frequency and amount depend on the number and type of fish in your pond.

Few fish

If you have a pond with few fish, you'll need to feed them little to nothing. Smaller fish, in particular, require little food because they can find plenty of food in the pond. They eat insects and larvae that make their habitat there.

Lots of fish

If you have a lot of fish in your pond, it's wise to feed them small portions several times a day. This is better than feeding them once a day, as the fish can digest the food better. In winter (meaning temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius), you don't need to feed your fish. They're inactive then, and their metabolism is therefore low. Feed them a little more at high temperatures and a little less at lower temperatures.

Important: the 5-minute rule!

In all cases, make sure the fish eat the food within about 5 minutes. If they take longer, you've overfed. Leftover food will float in the pond and quickly cause algae growth and cloudy water. So prevent this by not overfeeding!

Paddlefish use their paddle-shaped snouts to scan the environment for plankton. They are constantly foraging. They swim with their mouths wide open, sifting plankton from the river water. They are one of the few freshwater fish that obtains food in this "whale-like" way. For paddlefish, we offer House of Kata | Paddlefish Mix. The mix contains slowly sinking particles, allowing them to ingest them naturally.
